PMax is cannibalizing my branded search, is this actually expected or did I set something up wrong

Branded search impression share dropped the week after launching PMax, and PMax search terms show a lot of what looks like our own brand name. Asset group targeting doesn't exclude brand explicitly since there's no negative keyword option in PMax. Is this just how PMax behaves or is there a real fix?
